Center-based remedial education leading to reintegration into the public school system has long been a staple of the Friends-International approach, but in this new project we have been invited to pilot our remedial education directly into a primary school in Kok Chork, Siem Reap.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Kaliyan Mith Siem Reap and the Department of Education, Youth and Sport in December 2013, paving the way for these classes to begin in Kok Chork Primary School on February 12th this year.
Currently 29 children are benefiting from the Kaliyan elegant Mith team remedial teaching, spread over four levels and taking place over five afternoons during the week. The children have been supported with the provision of uniforms, all the learning materials they need and for those children living a distance of more than 3km from the school, bicycles.
As we move toward a strategy of decentralizing our services such as education and vocational training, projects like these will give us valuable experience in delivering community-based services that can then be rolled out across our other programs in due course.
